Short answers to the questions we get most. Each one links to the guide that covers it in depth — or starts a conversation on Discord if the docs do not.

How do I create my first project?

Go to Projects in your dashboard, click “New project”, pick a content type (manga, webtoon, comic, light novel), choose your source and target languages, then create a chapter and upload your pages. The Quick start walks through it step by step.

What is a credit and how is it spent?

Credits are consumed by OCR, translation and inpainting — roughly one credit per page per operation. Translation with your own API key (BYOK) costs 0 credits. Your balance is visible in the dashboard and in Settings → Billing.

How do I run the full pipeline on a chapter?

Open a chapter, upload pages, then use the dispatch actions: OCR detects the text, translation converts it into your target languages, and inpainting cleans the original text from the artwork. You can then open the visual editor to finalize. The pipeline guide covers every stage.

Which translation engines can I use?

Jokai supports DeepL and a curated catalog of Jokai models out of the box. You can also plug in any OpenAI-compatible provider — OpenAI, xAI, Gemini, or a custom endpoint — using your own API key (BYOK). See Translation providers & BYOK.

How accurate is the OCR?

Jokai runs a custom OCR pipeline for text detection with confidence scores per bubble. You can filter low-quality detections in Settings → OCR, enable AI correction before translation, and retry individual pages without re-running everything.

Can I translate into multiple languages at once?

Yes. A project can have several target languages and the pipeline dispatches one translation job per page and language. Adding a language later only translates what is new.

What is a glossary and why use one?

A glossary holds consistent translations for names, terms and onomatopoeia. When linked to a project, glossary entries are enforced during translation to keep character and term names consistent across chapters. Glossaries & consistency explains the details.

How does BYOK (Bring Your Own Key) work?

In Settings → Translation, add an OpenAI-compatible credential. When active, translations route through your key and cost 0 credits. Your key is encrypted at rest (AES-256-GCM) and never exposed to the browser.

Do credits expire?

Free plan credits are a one-time grant. Paid plans reset monthly — unused monthly credits do not roll over. If you downgrade, credits above the new plan’s grant are banked for 30 days and restored when you subscribe again. BYOK translations are always free.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. Cancel from Settings → Billing at any time. You keep access until the end of your billing period and your projects remain intact.

What export formats are supported?

Export chapters as ZIP, CBZ, PDF or PSD (Photoshop with editable text layers). Formats are tiered by plan: Free includes ZIP/CBZ, Starter adds PDF, and PSD is available from the Indie plan up. Server-rendered final images are free on every plan.

Can I work with other people?

Yes. From a project you can invite members as editors or viewers, with real-time editing, presence and page-level comments. Reusable teams and share links are covered in the collaboration guide.

How do I share feedback or report a bug?

The fastest way is our Discord community — the link is in the footer. You can also reach us through the contact page.
